Schilthorn (Bernese Oberland) – cable cars, Thrill Walk & Piz Gloria

Posted by

The Schilthorn is one of the best-known excursion mountains in the
Bernese Oberland.
At almost 3,000 meters above sea level, it offers wide panoramic views, modern mountain infrastructure and several attractions that can easily be combined in a single day trip.

Visitors come here for different reasons: some for the famous James Bond filming location, others for the exposed viewing platforms or simply for the alpine scenery.
Thanks to cable cars and mountain railways, the summit is accessible without long hikes.

Tickets from the valley to the Schilthorn
including Thrill Walk and Skyline Walk should be booked online in advance. Prices are usually a little over 100 euros:

Getting to the Schilthorn

The Schilthorn is located above the mountain village of
Mürren. Most visitors approach the area via
Interlaken, which has excellent rail connections from cities such as Zurich, Bern and Geneva.

Interlaken →  Lauterbrunnen

Interlaken is considered the transport hub of the Jungfrau region.
From here, trains run regularly to the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
The journey already provides impressive views of steep cliffs and waterfalls.

Lauterbrunnen → Mürren

From Lauterbrunnen, travelers continue by mountain railway or cable car to Grütschalp
and then by train to Mürren.
The village is car-free and serves as the main base for visiting the Schilthorn.

Cable car ascent to the Schilthorn

The ascent to the summit is divided into several stages, each offering changing perspectives
of the surrounding Alps.

Stage 1: Mürren → Birg
This section already provides clear views of the
Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
Rock faces and deep valleys dominate the scenery.

Stage 2: Birg → Schilthorn
The final section leads directly to the summit.
On clear days, the panoramic view extends far across the Bernese Alps.

Summit of the Schilthorn & Piz Gloria

At 2,970 meters, the summit of the Schilthorn is home to Piz Gloria,
the rotating restaurant made famous by the James Bond film
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Piz Gloria – revolving restaurant

The restaurant completes a full 360-degree rotation in about one hour,
allowing guests to enjoy constantly changing views of the Alps.
The menu combines Swiss classics with international dishes.

A popular option is the “007 Breakfast Buffet”, served until early afternoon.

007 Walk of Fame

Next to the restaurant, the 007 Walk of Fame documents the film history of the mountain.
Information boards and plaques provide background on the production and its location.

Birg Skyline Walk

On the descent, many visitors stop at Birg station.
Here you find the Skyline Walk, a glass-and-steel platform attached directly to the cliff.

  • Glass floor sections with a view straight down the rock wall
  • Wide panoramic outlook over the surrounding peaks
  • Good photo opportunities in almost every direction

Thrill Walk at Birg

The Thrill Walk continues from Birg along an exposed path fixed to the rock face.
It is designed for visitors who want a more adventurous experience.

Main elements of the Thrill Walk:

  • Cliff path following the vertical rock wall
  • Glass bridge sections above the valley
  • Net crawl tunnel extending into open space

The route is safe but not recommended for people with a strong fear of heights.
Most visitors need between 15 and 30 minutes to complete it.
