Most tourists from German-speaking countries travel by car or train in the Bernese Alps. The journey from the north and east of Germany or from Vienna is quite long, however. Some also fly to Switzerland for vacation.
The Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland does not have its own large international airports, but there are several airports nearby that are easily accessible:
1.Bern Belp Airport (BRN): About 45 minutes to an hour from Interlaken, the central town in the Bernese Oberland. This airport offers both domestic and some international flights.
2.Zürich Airport (ZRH): About 1.5 to 2 hours from Interlaken. Zurich Airport Kloten is the largest international airport in Switzerland and offers numerous international connections.
3.Geneva Airport (GVA): About 2 to 2.5 hours from Interlaken. Geneva Airport also offers a large number of international flights and can be a good choice if you are coming from a region that is not directly accessible from Zurich. In most cases, however, the airports of Bern and Zurich are the better choice as they are closer to the Bernese Oberland.
4.EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL/MLH/EAP): About 2 to 2.5 hours from Interlaken. This airport serves Switzerland as well as France and Germany and offers many international flights.
From these airports, you can either travel by train or rental car to reach the Bernese Oberland. The Swiss train connections are well organized and allow a comfortable journey to the most important places in the region.
