The highest mountains in the Bernese Oberland
The Bernese Oberland is part of the Bernese Alps and includes some of the highest and most impressive mountains in Switzerland.
Many of these peaks rise well above 4,000 meters and dominate the landscape north of the main Alpine ridge.
For visitors, these mountains shape the scenery, the climate and the famous panoramic views of the region.

Below is an overview of the ten highest mountains located in the Bernese Oberland.
Most of them belong to the classic group of Swiss four-thousanders and are primarily important for mountaineering rather than mass tourism.
Finsteraarhorn – 4,274 m
Aletschhorn – 4,193 m
Jungfrau – 4,158 m
Mönch – 4,107 m
Schreckhorn – 4,078 m
Gross Fiescherhorn – 4,049 m
Gross Grünhorn – 4,044 m
Lauteraarhorn – 4,042 m
Eiger – 3,967 m
Agassizhorn – 3,946 m
This ranking shows the highest peaks of the Bernese Oberland.
Eight of these mountains rise above the 4,000-meter mark.
The most famous peaks: Jungfrau, Eiger and Mönch
Although many of the highest mountains are only known to experienced climbers,
three peaks stand out internationally: the Jungfrau, the Eiger and the Mönch.
The Jungfrau is closely linked to the
Jungfraujoch,
where the highest railway station in Europe is located.
This makes the mountain one of the most visited high-alpine areas in Switzerland,
even for travelers without mountaineering experience.
The Eiger is famous worldwide because of its dramatic north face.
The Eiger North Face is considered one of the most legendary and demanding climbing routes in the Alps and has played a major role in the history of alpine mountaineering.
The Mönch, although less dramatic in appearance, completes this famous trio.
Together, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau form the most iconic mountain panorama of the Bernese Oberland.

Other well-known mountains in the region
In addition to the classic trio, several other peaks shape the high-alpine landscape.
Mountains such as the Schreckhorn or the Fiescherhorn group are among the most challenging summits in Switzerland and are mainly visited by experienced alpinists.
The railway journey to the
Schilthorn,
which rises to almost 3,000 meters, is also considered legendary.
Although it is not among the highest peaks, it is one of the most accessible viewpoints in the Bernese Alps.
Access to the Bernese Alps
The mountains of the Bernese Oberland are best accessed from
Interlaken.
The town lies between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz and serves as the main transport hub of the region.
From Interlaken, visitors can reach high-altitude areas using an extensive network of
cog railways and funiculars.
This infrastructure makes the Bernese Alps one of the most accessible high-mountain regions in Europe.
The Finsteraarhorn – highest but little visited
The Finsteraarhorn is the highest mountain in the Bernese Oberland,
yet it plays only a minor role in tourism.
Unlike the Jungfrau or the Eiger, it cannot be seen from the main valleys
and there is no cable car or railway leading toward its summit.
For this reason, the mountain remains the domain of serious mountaineers.
Its remote location east of the Eiger–Mönch–Jungfrau group contributes to its quiet and untouched character.
