Kleine Scheidegg is a high mountain train station in the Bernese Oberland. It is mainly known as the transfer point for the famous
train to the Jungfraujoch.
Every passenger heading to Jungfraujoch has to change trains here. Cars cannot reach Kleine Scheidegg – there are no public roads. You can only get here by train or on foot.

Right next to the station you find a small cluster of restaurants, shops and a few buildings. Overnight stays are possible as well, mainly used by hikers and skiers. Because of its location, Kleine Scheidegg is also a practical base for hikes in the
Bernese high mountains.
Kleine Scheidegg Railway: how to get there
Kleine Scheidegg is reached by the Wengernalpbahn (WAB). The line connects the valleys with the high mountain pass and is part of the classic mountain railway system in the Jungfrau region.
- From Lauterbrunnen via Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg
- From Kleine Scheidegg onward to Grindelwald (and the other way round)
The Wengernalpbahn is a rack railway and is often described as the longest rack railway in the world. For many visitors, the ride itself is already part of the sightseeing.
The second major train at this station is the world-famous Jungfraujoch railway, which continues from Kleine Scheidegg up to the Jungfraujoch.

Typical route: travel by train from Interlaken to either Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, continue with the Wengernalpbahn to Kleine Scheidegg, then switch to the Jungfraujoch line.
Why you should not rush through Kleine Scheidegg
Many tourists stay only a few minutes, just long enough to change trains. In practice, it often makes sense to plan extra time here and take a later connection. The views are outstanding and the hiking options start directly at the station.

What to do in Kleine Scheidegg?
First of all: enjoy the scenery. Kleine Scheidegg lies at 2,061 meters above sea level and offers a classic Jungfrau-region panorama. You see the most famous peaks of the Bernese Oberland, including
Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
These mountains rise more than 4,000 meters, so the peaks tower roughly another 2,000 meters above the station.
One major highlight is the view of the Eiger North Face. From Kleine Scheidegg you get one of the most direct and impressive perspectives.
Kleine Scheidegg also works well for short and longer hikes. Even a 30-minute walk in the area can feel like a real mountain experience. Weather can change quickly, and snowfields are possible even in late spring or early summer.
Food, restaurants and practical services
There are cafés and restaurants close to the station. Prices are not cheap, but for Swiss mountain locations they are often considered reasonable. Many visitors mention friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere.
A popular restaurant sits directly in the station building. Typical quick meals include bratwurst or pizza-style dishes. Behind the station you can often sit outside (beer-garden style) and enjoy the view.
Facilities around the station include:
- a larger sports store (souvenirs and mountain equipment)
- lockers at the station
- easy transfers: Wengernalpbahn in front of the station, Jungfraujoch trains behind it
The best-known hotel here is Bellevue des Alpes, only a short walk from the station.
Kleine Scheidegg is tiny – less than a dozen buildings and no real supermarket. If you plan to stay longer, bring snacks and basics.

Jungfraujoch day trips are also offered from places like Zurich, Lucerne or Geneva. Here are a few popular options:
