Zurich in one day: easy itinerary + top sights

Posted by

Zurich is one of the best cities for a short Switzerland trip. It is compact, easy to navigate by tram, and combines a historic old town with museums, lake views and great viewpoints. If you only have one day, you can still see a lot – especially if you follow a simple route from the Old Town to the lake and up to Zurich’s local mountain.

If you want a guaranteed highlight that often sells out, plan the Lindt museum early and book ahead.

Morning: Old Town walk + Zurich’s famous churches

Start in the Old Town along the Limmat. The easiest walk is to explore the narrow lanes, small squares and historic buildings around the river. You will pass cafés, classic Swiss shops and (yes) chocolate stores – good for a quick snack before the sightseeing continues.

Two churches dominate the classic Zurich skyline:

  • Fraumünster – famous for stained glass windows by Marc Chagall and a very central location in the Old Town.
  • Grossmünster – the Romanesque landmark with twin towers on the opposite side of the river. If you go up, you get one of the best city views.

Late morning: Kunsthaus Zurich (optional, but excellent)

If you want a museum stop, Kunsthaus Zurich is a strong choice. It is one of Switzerland’s most important art museums, with Swiss art and major international names. Even a short visit works well on a day itinerary.

Afternoon: Bahnhofstrasse + Lake Zurich

After the Old Town, head to Bahnhofstrasse. You do not have to buy anything – a walk is enough to see why it is famous: polished storefronts, luxury brands and classic Zurich city life.

From there, continue to Lake Zurich. The promenade is ideal for a relaxed break. If the weather is good, a short boat ride on Lake Zurich is one of the easiest ways to enjoy the scenery without much effort.

Alternative afternoon: Uetliberg viewpoint

For a big panorama without a long hike, take the train to Uetliberg (Zurich’s local mountain). From the top you get wide views over the city, the lake and, on clear days, the Alps. The area is also popular for short walks; in winter it can feel very different and more “Alpine.”

Evening: dinner in the Old Town or Zurich West

For dinner, the Old Town has many reliable options, including Swiss classics like cheese fondue. If you prefer a modern atmosphere, go to Zurich West, a former industrial district that now has restaurants, bars and a more local nightlife vibe.
