The Bernese Oberland, a region in the Swiss Alps, is home to a wide variety of wildlife. From lush valleys to rugged mountain peaks, the region’s diverse habitats are home to countless species. Some of the notable animals found in the Bernese Oberland include

Mammals Bernese Oberland (Switzerland)

Alpine Ibex – This majestic animal is primarily found in steep, rocky terrain. It is easily recognized by its large, curved antlers.

Chamois – Similar to the ibex but smaller, the chamois is a nimble climber and is commonly found on cliffs and rocky slopes of the Bernese Oberland.
Red deer – Switzerland’s largest species of deer is found in forests and meadows.
Marmot – This small, burrowing animal is common in alpine meadows and is known for its loud whistle.

Marmot: These rather small rodents are commonly found in alpine meadows, where they whistle to warn their colonies of various dangers. At home in many parts of the Alps.

Wolf – For several years now there have been signs of wolves in the Bernese Alps. However, the population is larger in other parts of Switzerland. In the Bernese Oberland there have only been isolated signs of wolves – but it is expected that several packs will soon settle here too.
Brown bear – The brown bear was extinct in Switzerland for over 100 years. In the last 20 years individual animals have crossed the borders into Switzerland, mainly from Italy and also from Austria. However, hardly any brown bears have been seen in the Bernese Oberland. However, this could soon change. So far bears have been seen in Switzerland mainly near the Italian border.
